Woolacombe Surf Life Saving Club – A Season of success and club spirit

Woolacombe Surf Life Saving Club have capped off a phenomenal summer of competition, with outstanding success across all age groups from Nippers right up to Masters. After training hard in the pool all winter, the club returned to Woolacombe Beach to continue honing their skills in the sea and on the sand. Many members could be seen most evenings after school or work, putting in the hours as they built up to the Regional and National events. And it paid off — trophies were retained or won back across the whole club.

The season kicked off in style at the Devon Ocean Championships, hosted by Saunton SLSC at Saunton Beach, where both the Nipper and Youth teams stormed to victory — a clean sweep that set the tone for what was to come. The extraordinarily hot weather in July meant that the sand reached a staggering 40+ degrees on competition day, so some beach events were cancelled or postponed to a cooler evening. With many thanks to Parkin Estates, the Nippers held their beach events at Woolacombe Beach, with clubs from across the region making the trip to compete. The Nippers topped the leaderboard with 4,927 points, followed by our neighbouring beaches — Saunton with 2,612 points and Croyde with 1,629.

This momentum carried the club through to the National Ocean Championships in Weymouth, where once again both Nipper and Youth groups took home National titles. The conditions were unlike anything the athletes had faced before — a flat, wave-less sea and shallow water turned the swim into a wade and the board race into a bunny-hopping battle. But Woolacombe adapted, dug deep, and came out on top, proving that true surf lifesavers can thrive in any conditions. Across the Youth and Nippers, Hayle were close behind in every event, but the Nippers managed a 538-point lead to take the title, and the Youth became champions again with a 418-point lead.

The Masters, with a solid and committed team but with some of the fewest team members, managed to take an incredible 5th spot at their National Championships at Weymouth scoring just as many 1st place points as the leaders, Bude.

To top off the season, the Senior team delivered a historic performance at the 2025 Open Nationals, held at the famous Fistral Beach. The weather threw everything at the team — sunshine, wind, driving rain, and unpredictable surf — but they showed fierce teamwork and determination to take the national title, beating powerhouse Portreath for the first time since 2001. In previous years, the team fielded only eight athletes, but this season saw an incredible 35 competitors. After years of building momentum and consistent success at Nipper and Youth level, the club’s athletes — new, emerging, and experienced — rose to the occasion, showcasing skill, talent, and determination across the beach and the ocean.

This victory ended a 19-year streak of dominance by Portreath SLSC — an achievement we can only commend and respect — and we know they’ll be back fighting for the trophy next year. It was a fierce battle for the top spot, but Woolacombe took 750 points, ahead of Portreath with 602 and Pen Y Bont in third with 268.

These achievements cement Woolacombe’s place at the forefront of surf lifesaving in the UK. The results are a testament to the dedication of athletes, coaches, volunteers, families, and the wider community who have worked tirelessly to strengthen the club. It marks the beginning of an exciting new era, where Woolacombe looks set to remain a force in this wonderful sport for years to come.

A season of waves, wins, and unwavering spirit — this year, Woolacombe SLSC didn’t just compete, they made history. Woolacombe, we’re proud of you.
